Xavi on Neymar: It’s bizarre that a player doesn’t want to stay at Barcelona

Not since Luis Figo has such a major player left Barcelona in the circumstances that Neymar did a fortnight ago, claims Xavi as the former Blaugrana star admits his surprise at the Brazilian’s desire to move on.

With Neymar soon to make his Paris Saint-Germain debut, Xavi stated that it is exceedingly rare for a player to feel like his footballing career is better off away from the Camp Nou.

“It was his decision and you have to respect it,” said the midfielder to Le Parisien. “It’s a personal choice. “Players today move to where they’re wanted the most. But nobody could have imagined that he’d leave Barcelona.

“It’s bizarre that a player doesn’t want to stay at Barcelona. It’s very rare. “It’s been 17 years since Luis Figo left for Real Madrid. As with Neymar, it was his choice at the time. “I do not know how it happened, if there were meetings, conversations… there are many interpretations of this transfer record.”

One of the perplexing factors of the transfer for Xavi was how Neymar gave only a short social media message to his old club’s supporters as he departed.

“I understand the fans are upset because Neymar gave no explanation,” continued the veteran playmaker. “He left Barcelona without a press conference or anything… but hey, that’s how it is. “We’ll see what he can give to PSG. What I’m sure of is that Barcelona did not expect a club to pay the 222 million euro release clause.
