Everton have NOT reached an agreement with Manchester United over Romelu Lukaku, talkSPORT understands. Reports emerged on Thursday morning that the Toffees had accepted a £75million bid from United for their star striker.
But senior sources at the Merseyside club have told talkSPORT that the reports are ‘premature’ and ‘no deal has been reached’. United are understood to remain hopeful of securing Lukaku’s signature, however.
Jose Mourinho is desperate to bring in a new striker and has made the 24-year-old his top target, having ended his interest in Real Madrid’s Alvaro Morata. Mourinho sold Lukaku to Everton when he was Chelsea boss but now sees him as the ideal man to lead his forward line at United after Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s departure.
Chelsea are also interested in re-signing Lukaku but United have close ties to his agent, Mino Raiola, and expect to beat the Premier League champions to the Belgian. Raiola negotiated deals for Paul Pogba, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Henrikh Mkhitaryan to move to Old Trafford last summer.
Speaking to talkSPORT in May, Raiola said Everton had promised Lukaku he can leave this summer if ‘certain clubs come in for him’. But Everton, backed by billionaire Farhad Moshiri, are under no pressure to sell and United have work to do to secure his signature.
Moshiri is hoping to bring Wayne Rooney back to Goodison Park but he will not accept United’s record goalscorer as a makeweight in any deal for Lukaku.
