Something looks quirky on the part of Elias Ewusi Essel better known as Donzy who is rooting high for his fellow rapper Medikal to win the overall artiste of the year category.
His post on Facebook which read enobi about past glories or big names oo, Medikal fit chop artiste of the year simple… the guy work!! #maMindBeThat got Flex newspaper into getting a closer chat with the rapper to get more details from him.
Chancing on him, he detailed that he isn’t in the overall artiste category so obviously cannot talk for himself but for the people in there, his pick among EL, Sarkodie, Mzvee and Joe Mettle will go for Medikal. He says the rapper really did well in the year under review considering the videos and songs he released together with shows he played all around the country.
He says, the other competitors as well worked hard but for him as one who follows Medikal, he sees his hard work as one that stands tall among the others and thus believes Medikal can just win that category hands down. His main stance on this as others keep saying Medikal is too young to be in there is that, “it’s not about the big name, I heard some people say he is too young and stuff but it isn’t about that. If Tutulapatu should work hard during the year under review, and he gets the overall artiste of the year, would you say he is so young and that he doesn’t deserve it? Does this also mean to say the artiste of the year category belongs to only the older artistes?”
Donzy claims Medikal fits perfectly in the criteria for that category which is who worked hard under the year of review. He blames the ignorant ones who forsake the criteria but go about ranting on Medikal’s spot. “If you follow the audience, you will go wrong. They always have issues with every category but do not mind what goes in there. Those against him are ignorant of the category criteria and again do not follow his hard work.”
In his response to why he isn’t doing same for Kofi Kinaata he said “Kofi at the latter part of the year had a big song. His isn’t as if from February he was big through to December. But Medikal was all over the place from the beginning to the end of the year. Kinaata’s Sweety Pie begun the year and confession did for the latter part. If confession had come earlier, he would have been in there and hey, I am talking about those in the category. If he was in there, I would have gone in for him but for him, he is out and I’m not the one to talk about it.”
Meanwhile, he is disappointed at his own nomination, where his hit song club just had one nomination when he hoped for three. “I had just one making me feel a bit disappointed. I was expecting more than one or at least two because Club didn’t hit only in Accra but across the nation. It was one of the best collaborations under the year of review so I was really surprised when we didn’t get that category as well as song writer of the year,” he said.
Donzy felt his single nomination was a form of compensation by the board after they denied him of the other two so he wouldn’t feel left out but his club according to him deserved more than what was given him.
This year’s nomination saw new artistes dominating the given categories and Donzy seems to be proud of it. “It’s music and we are dealing with the year under review. We have so many underground artistes working so hard to attain lime light and it’s even a good thing more of the new guys are in there. That is how it’s supposed to be, if it’s always the old ones, then it means there is a problem, but as new arts crop in, then it means there are a lot more talents to be discovered. The new artistes in there means the industry is getting more interesting and that is a plus.”
Most old artistes from the past years keep withdrawing from the scheme but the new crop of artistes have it at heart. This, Donzy says is how the world is. “When the old Akwaboa’s and his folks were coming up, they were excited like we are but withdrew for new ones to come in and this is how it’s going to be forever. After some time the Sarks and Stonebwoys will as well drop out for new artistes to enter so it’s normal.”
In his final words, though disappointed at his nominations, he would want his fans and people, who really enjoyed club to use the advantage of his single nomination for the hip life song of the year, to channel all their votes to him. “Unlike the others who have more than one, where you would have to share the votes between them, mine is just one, so give all to me so we can take home this award. Send the letter O to 1767 on all networks and do watch out for more hits after the VGMAs.
