David Silva’s incredible goal record with Spain continued as he got the first in his country’s comfortable 4-1 win over Israel.
The Manchester City midfielder took his goalscoring record to 29 goals in 110 games with his first half strike and he could have doubled his tally crashing a shot onto the crossbar in the second half.Only David Villa with 59 goals in 97 games; Raul with 44 goals in 102 games and Fernando Torres with 38 goals in 110 games have scored more.
Silva is level with Real Madrid midfielder Fernando Hierro, who got 29 in 89 matches, and they both share the title of highest scorer who doesn’t play as a forward.Chelsea striker Diego Costa, Vitolo Machin and Isco were also on the scoresheet as Spain stayed top of Group G with 13 points from five games.
However, Spain did not have it all their own way in the first half.Gerard Pique almost allowed Eran Zahavi to get away from him but recovered to block his shot.
Thiago Alcantara then hit the crossbar as Spain began to warm-up and on 13 minutes they had the lead. The goal was a double nutmeg of sorts with Jordi Alba passing to Silva through the legs of Eli Dasa and Silva taking one touch on the turn and firing through the legs of Ofir Marciano in Israel’s goal.
It was an excellent finish from Silva that matched Alba’s pass. Costa had also played his part winning the ball before giving it to Thiago who released Alba.Israel suffered more bad fortune on 18 minutes when defender Eitan Tibi had to go off injured. But it didn’t prevent them having the next big chance when Jordi Alba gifted possession to Zahavi who again failed to make the most of the chance.
David de Gea then had to push away Lior Refaelov’s effort as Spain were so nearly caught out at the back again. But within a minute of De Gea’s save, Vitolo scored. He peeled away from his marker and Thiago spotted him with a clever pass that he just managed to turn in despite the ball’s passage to goal slowed by Marciano’s outstretched hand.
Spain should have been three-up two minutes into the second half but Costa missed a chance he would surely have buried wearing Chelsea blue. Dani Carvajal crossed from the right and Costa was unmarked with the goal at his mercy on the edge of the six-yard box but he headed tamely wide.
He made amends moments later when he rose at the far post to head a Thiago corner down and past Marciano for the third. It was more difficult than the chance he had missed seconds before.Lior Refaelov smashed in a consolation goal for Israel after Rami Gershon headed on to the frame of the goal. But the win was never in doubt for Spain and substitute Isco made it 4-1 with two minutes left.
Spain now go into their friendly against France on Tuesday, well on course for Russia 2018, and with the luxury of being able to give minutes to Alvaro Morata, Pedro and Ander Herrera who watched this one from the bench.
