A difficult summer for Barcelona could have been alleviated with a double capture from Atletico Madrid, however it has been said that the Catalan club pushed forward with their interest too late. With Neymar leaving for Paris Saint-Germain, Saul Niguez and Antoine Griezmann were already on the Barcelona radar.
According to Onda Cero’s Jose Ramon de la Morena, club president Josep Maria Bartomeu was ready to pay the midfielder’s 80 million euro release clause until Atletico renewed Saul’s contract and upped the buy-out to 150m euros.
Once that move had been discarded, Barcelona turned their attention to Griezmann but again the release clause stipulated in the player’s contract was proactively increased by Los Rojiblancos.
Happy to fork over the 100m euros of Griezmann’s previous buy-out, Atletico upped the stipulated amount to 200m euros, allowing them to rebuff the supposed subsequent offer of 140m euros.
It is said that both Saul and Griezmann are big admirers of Lionel Messi, who the Frenchman particularly saw himself playing alongside once Neymar left for PSG.
